80's Rock
A big-up to my little Sis for this section
as it was not my bag at the time, although I
must confess to still having her Guns 'n'
Roses 12" Paradise City, in the attic
that I swore I never had... ;-)
Here's what she wrote,
My Favourite music trend in the 80's was big
hair rock, hard rock and metal rock. It all
came from the roots of the 70's hard rock,
The guitar riff was the weapon of choice.
It was a counter attack to the mainstream
pop music and the yuppie culture.
Denim, leather, spandex, long hair, and even
makeup (on the boys!)were a must have
fashion statement associated with the rock
scene, The bigger the hair the better, I must
admit to backcombing my hair to the max and
contributing to destroying the ozone layer
with many cans of hairspray used every week!
Glam, sleazy, progressive, trash and speed
became variants of Hard Rock.
The power ballad was one particular aspect
of the Hard Rock movement,
Full with guitars, slow drum beat and sad
lyrics, The power ballad was loud, hard felt
and to the point.
Mostly bands released these ballads to
attempt to break the top 40
and get a hit song, many of which succeeded.
